Nerves of Steel: How I Followed My Dreams, Earned My Wings, and Faced My Greatest Challenge Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- What an amazing woman! : I am a coworker of Tammie Jo. I have flown with her as a flight attendant since she was a new first officer at Southwest Airlines. She has always been an exemplary coworker and most of us never even knew of any of her past accomplishments as she does not brag on herself at all. She has always been someone I enjoy flying with. I was lucky enough to fly with Tammie Jo on her first flight back after flight 1380 and she handled herself with extreme poise and professionalism on that flight as well. This is a great book and I will recommend to all. So proud to have Tammie Jo on the SWA team. Thanks for making us proud! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tt723 -- All I can say is - WOW! : I couldn't put this book down! Tammie Jo's recollection of her Navy years is a combination of GI Jane and Top Gun but in way more detail and with way more stories. The sheer determination and courage it took for her to overcome all the obstacles she was presented with there was nothing short of surreal. Also there's a different life lesson on nearly every page of this book and I think it should be a must read for every kid out there. In my opinion this isn't a book written for women. It's a book that shows you there are people that are good at their job and that treat people right, and those that don't, regardless of gender. I think there was a reason she was in that cockpit on that day and it's because she had the unique set of exceptional skills, both physical and mental, needed to get that plane safely on the ground. Not to mention that it is incredibly well written and I'm really grateful she was able to share her story. Totally worth every penny and more! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2019 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from David J. Bezinque -- Ok read : I found this book interesting but also irritating. I realize that her religion is a big part of her life, but she didn’t have to bring it up constantly throughout the book. I would have liked to hear more about her training and flying experiences. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan D. Delaney, MD, MS, author -- A Stupendous Book. Uplifting for Anyone, but Especially for Women : At every moment of this thrilling book, Southwest Airlines Captain Tammie Jo Schultz shows us that our worth comes from our relationship with God, not from what others say or think about us. Her stunning resilience, built on this lifelong belief, allowed her to train as a Navy fighter pilot in spite of a hostile environment, an environment that alternated with a very hostile environment. Later, at Southwest Airlines she encountered the same hostile environment, but always stood on what she knew to be true about herself: she was competent and she had "done the work" to belong where she was. Her competence was tested when the left engine of her SWA plane exploded, damaging the wing, tail and a passenger window. Captain Schultz calmly assessed the damage, redirected to Philadelphia, which had long runways and fire and paramedic services and, informed her passengers, "we're not going down, we are going to Philly." And then, against incredible odds, she flew the seriously damaged plane to Philadelphia and landed it gently. While waiting for airstairs, Captain Schultz walked through the cabin, making eye contact with each passenger and inquiring if they were OK. Her life and achievements are an inspiration to any woman, especially for women who want to bring their hearts to work. I love one of her chapter headings: PEOPLE WHO SAY IT CANNOT BE DONE SHOULD NOT INTERRUPT THOSE WHO ARE DOING IT. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from R. W. Russell -- Chauvanists and bigots: this is what you look like : Years ago while working a very high-tech profession, I was very much like Tammie Jo's antagonists. In my view, any woman occupying a slot on my team was denying some deserving guy a rewarding career. My interactions with such women reflected that mentality. Thankfully, an evolving corporate culture turned that around for me, and I retired as the manager of a group that included some outstanding technicians who happened to be female. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jom Bro -- A good story of Life and living. : I started to rate this book at 4 stars because it wasn't exactly what I expected. Then I realized my expectations are my problem and should not be used to judge this book because that is exactly what Tammy Jo was subjected to for her entire career. It wasn't fair. Read the book and you will understand. Initially I was looking for more facts about what caused the engine to malfunction and more narrative on hew Tammy Jo and her First Officer managed the crisis. All of that information is available in the FAA review of the incident which was not the purpose of this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. K. Videan -- One of the best books I've bought. : Extremely well written, as an aviation enthusiast I've had visits to some of the places Tammie Jo did her flying training at, so it was nice being able to relate to the locations. The amount of knocks that Tammie Jo took while following her dream and to get up again after each one really took a lot of determination. Brilliant. I would recommend anyone who loves flying, wants to learn how to get through tough times or just wants a book that is a good read to read this book. LOVED IT. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. Donato -- Overcome, and learn from, adversity and brilliantly succeed. : An inspiring book which I completely read in a few days only. How life experiences can help shape you and develop resilience... And in the end, have a brilliant career and succeed when it matters most. An eye opener too - sometimes on the receiving end of unfortunate jealousy and unfair treatment. ( Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Client d'Amazon -- EXCELENTE 😍 : Captain Shults habla de sus aventuras como piloto de caza y más tarde de aerolínea, y de las dificultades que tuvo que superar por el simple hecho de ser mujer. ( Reviewed in Spain on January 31, 2021 )
